TCD Book of Kells
Concept and Strategy
Concept
After my research, the part I found most interesting was the Chi Rho page. So I decided to create a design based on the Chi Ro page which is told from the perspective of the Goldsmith, its assumed creator. I will also briefly describe the Eight Cross circle page which is also assumed to be created by the Goldsmith. I decided to call my theme A Goldsmith’s Tale. I will be presenting this information through type and illustrations (interpretations of original Book of Kells illustrations). My products will be an A6 double sided brochure and a gift box which will hold the brochure which will be presented to a visitor visiting Trinity College Dublin where the Book of Kells has been preserved.
Strategy
Planning
- Draw up content from research.
- Choose illustrations that will support the content.
- Choose typefaces, colour palette and papers.
- Create mock up of A6 brochure.
- Choose grid structure and create margins.
- Make sketches of how content will be laid out.
- Get box dimensions.
- Create sketches for ideas for box.
Paper and Type
Colour palette
I want to use a limited colour palette that resembles the Chi Rho page as much as possible. I will achieve this by choosing a colour palette created in Illustrator which is taken directly from the colours used on the Chi Rho page. My main colours will be dark brown/black at 90% opacity, dark purple, yellow/gold and red/orange.
The brochure
The A6 brochure will contain 12 pages including front and back cover. It will illuminate designs mainly from the Chi Rho page like the X symbol and triskels.

Grid structure
I will use a basic 2 column grid structure with 8mm as my margins all around. The gutter size will be 4.4mm.
The cover of my box will illustrate the two mice holding a Eucharist which divides in half as the folds open. The paper used will be the brown coffee stained paper and the same border used on the brochure will surround the box. Other ideas are also being explored.
Troubleshooting
Issues that may arise would be creating the box to a professional degree as it is handmade which may result in floppiness. Therefore I have to be extremely careful while making the box and ask for the lecturer’s assistance if required. Another issue would be creating the illustrations of Book of Kells images as many of them have not been properly restored or the image quality may not be good. I’ll have to use my Illustrator skills to fix this issue.
Print Solutions and Software
The final brochure and box designs will be created in InDesign. I will use the facility of a printers to print the brochure as it’s double sided. In terms of the box, I will hand make it from scoring and folding.
